My email account on G-Mail was hacked. Someone was opening and checking mails. How that happens? I heard that just knowing email ID is sufficient to hack it.

Knowing email ID is not enough for having access. The password must have been either key-logged or someone might have had access to your computer's cache/temp files.
GMail has been one of the most reliable and safe email providers (at least for me). I don't think the email provider is not your problem. You may be able to find more info regarding this case online.
Temporarily, you can change your password and see how that affects your account.
